PROVO — The Angel Moroni statue was placed on top of the new Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' temple in Provo Monday.

The Provo City Center Temple will be the second in Provo. The new temple is being built on the site of the old Provo Tabernacle on University Ave., which was gutted by a fire in December 2010.

The LDS church announced the Provo Tabernacle would be restored as a temple in 2011. In order to preserve the structure of the old Provo Tabernacle, the building was temporarily put on stilts during construction.

"This is this probably the most significant thing to happen in downtown Provo in 100 years," said Richard Holzapfel, LDS church history professor at Brigham Young University.

Holzapfel was excited to see the statue put into place, but he said his thoughts turned to the early Mormon pioneers who settled Provo and helped build the tabernacle in the late 1800s.

"Could they have foreseen this — they probably never imagined what an amazing part of history that we are in," he said.

The original Provo Tabernacle was constructed from 1893 to 1898, according to the church. This is the second time the LDS church has converted a tabernacle into a temple — the 100-year-old Uintah Stake Tabernacle was dedicated as the Vernal Utah Temple in 1997.

The completion date for the Provo City Center Temple has not yet been announced.
