WANSHIP, Summit County — A fire at a home near Wanship caused $100,000 in damage Tuesday.

A neighbor noticed smoke coming out of a single family home at 2063 Valley Vista Drive in Tollgate Canyon around 2:30 p.m. and notified fire officials. It took the first crew 27 minutes to reach the fire because there is not yet a fire station in the area, according to North Summit Fire District spokesman Tyler Rowser.

Firefighters found smoke and flames coming from inside the house. Once they realized no one was in the home, crews "began to ventilate and attack the fire," Rowser said.

Crews had to dig through snow to access a fire hydrant. They contained the fire to three rooms, according to Rowser. The flames burned from the basement and through the main floor. Other areas in the home were damaged by smoke and water.

The home, valued at $170,000, received at least $100,000 in damage, Rowser said. Other items in the home were valued from $15,000 to $20,000.

Summit County sheriff's deputies notified the homeowners, who were not in the country, of the fire. Investigators from the Utah State Fire Marshall's office were on site Wednesday to determine the cause of the fire.

Those who live in areas with a high snow volume should make sure nearby hydrants are not blocked by snow or other items, Rowser said.

Tollgate Canyon is in the process of being annexed into the North Summit Fire District. Because of the pending annexation, crews and resources were nearby to respond to the fire.
