COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Three hikers found a dead body on a trail Friday, police said.

The body of a man in his 20s was found on a trail in Ferguson Canyon, which is a popular hiking trailhead, according to Cottonwood Heights police. The hikers called police at about 2:45 p.m., investigators said.

"We sent officers up there and they did in fact locate a young male deceased," said Sgt. Mark Askerland.

The body was found lying at the bottom of an outcropping of rocks, he said.

Unified police believe a man found dead by hikers Friday afternoon committed suicide. Askerland said there was no climbing gear in close proximity to the body or nearby rocks.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
