SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested after he allegedly damaged property in a neighborhood Wednesday, police said.

Officers were dispatched to the area because of reports that a man was a danger to himself and others, police said. The incident occurred at 7:30 a.m. in the area of 330 S. and 900 East.

"When officers arrived he had left his residence and went around the neighborhood and had broken out a couple of car windows, as well as windows at residences in the neighborhood," said Salt Lake City police Det. Veronica Montoya.

Michael Lawrence Smith, 41, confronted officers when he returned home and found them there, Montoya said. Smith also wielded a pocket knife in each hand and wasn't compliant with the officers' requests, but was taken into custody after a taser deployment was initiated.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of interfering with an officer, use of a weapon in a fight, criminal mischief and resisting an officer.

No one was injured during the incident, Montoya said.

"We're happy that (the person who reported the incident) called police and we were able to take him into custody without anybody getting hurt," she said.
