UTAH COUNTY — Rachel Turner knows a thing or two about saving money on groceries. With a website dedicated to price matching generating more than 80,000 monthly page views, and a Facebook page with nearly 15,000 “likes,” it is easy to say that thousands agree.

Growing up in New York, raised primarily by her grandmother, Turner is quick to boast about the hearty home-cooked meals but admits that there isn't a “savvy bone” in her grandmother's body. She did, however, say that she was taught compassion for others; something that would serve her (and others) well.

Years later, as a wife and mother of two young children, Turner found herself working away from her home supporting her family while her husband was in school. Guilt-ridden and missing time with her family, Turner began looking for ways to cut costs.

Finding that they were spending $700 per month on groceries, she started there. With coupons being a popular money-saving technique, she tried it, only to find that she wasn't saving much on produce, meat or dairy which were her family’s staples.

“There is no coupon for bananas, and how much free toothpaste and deodorant does one need?” Turner said.

Needing to stay under budget and buy “real food rather than processed foods,” Turner turned to price matching. Desperately wanting this method of saving money to help her family, she prayed for help.

“I am a very religious person and prayed to God that if he would help me master the price matching skill that I desperately needed, I would share my knowledge by pay it forward to everyone and anyone,” she said.

That's exactly what happened.

Turner began teaching her skills in her local church and community; she would tell people at the grocery store that the items in their cart could be price matched; and she has even been known to inventory a complete stranger's cart for them hoping to save them some money.

Realizing she could help so many save money, Turner began a small (free) website where she would post lists of price-matched goods to help others more easily make their grocery lists. Being a brunette, and not wanting the site to be about her, Turner trademarked a blonde-haired woman as her logo

The website didn't stay small for long, and before she knew it, Turner was helping thousands save money. With appearances on local TV stations and at local trade shows, Turner has become a household staple for savvy moms (and dads) across the state.

Recently, the deal-seeking mother added a cable television talk show to her resume, which is set to air this month.

Best of all, Turner said, she was able to quit her job to stay home with her children. Her new job has allowed her the freedom to set her own hours. On the days she price matches, she gets up at 4 a.m., and her show films in the mornings while her children are in school.

Turner is excited about her new adventure and hopes to help others stretch their money a little further. “After all,” she said, “money can’t grow on trees, but it can stretch!”
