NEPHI, Juab County — Four Juab County deputies have been cleared of any wrongdoing after they shot the man suspected in the shooting and killing Utah County Sgt. Cory Wride and wounding deputy Greg Sherwood.

The four Juab deputies were justified in shooting suspect Jose Garcia, and they will be back on the job Friday after spending the last 15 days on paid leave during this investigation, said officials at a press conference Friday.

The four deputies confronted the suspect six miles south of Nephi after he had allegedly carjacked a young mother and her child and allegedly stole their car after the tires in their original truck had been spiked at the south Nephi interchange.

The tires in that stolen car were also spiked and the suspects lost control and got out. Garcia allegedly shot at a passing motorist and then at the deputies. Those deputies returned fire and Garcia was critically wounded and died the next day.

"These officers were entitled to use deadly force,” said Juab County Attorney Jared Eldredge.

The sheriff said he is proud of his deputies for putting themselves in danger and believes all of the law enforcement officers involved that day went far above the call of duty.

The investigation about the 17-year-old girl who was allegedly with Garcia is on going. Prosecutors in Utah County and Juab County are still reviewing evidence to determine what charges she could face for her role in the alleged shootings and the alleged carjacking in Nephi.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
