SOCHI, Russia — History is in the making Tuesday as three Utahns will compete in the same event in Sochi. After 10 years of trying to have the event included in the Olympics, women will participate in ski jumping.

Sarah Hendrickson tweeted Tuesday morning that she got bib No. 1, so she’ll be the first one to jump, making Olympic history. NBC’s Matt Lauer asked her how she balances that with the need to concentrate on jumping.

"I'd say we are somewhere in the middle,” she responded. “Of course being here is very historic for our sport, but we also need to focus on our event, despite everything that is happening around us."

She also said that three women ski jumpers will walk away with medals Tuesday, but 27 others helped make history.

Jessica Jerome and Lindsey Van are the other two members of the USA team. They also live and train in Park City.

DeeDee Corradini, the president of Ski Jumping USA and a former Salt Lake City mayor, is glad to see this happen not just for the Park City women but for those from other countries, too.

"My hope is that these young athletes who are such incredible young women will be role models for other young girls," she said. "The message is, if you stick with it and you are persistent and determined, you can achieve your dreams."
