TAYLORSVILLE — A stolen car smashed into a light pole in Taylorsville overnight, and the car's driver then jumped fences and hid in bushes to get away from officers until a police dog bit him, police said.

Residents near 4928 South and 1130 West heard a crash outside their homes just after midnight, and found the smashed vehicle.

When police arrived the driver was gone, but they discovered something else.

"When the officer got there he ran the plate of the vehicle (and) found it was stolen. So he ran the VIN and found the vehicle was stolen as well," said Sgt. Rosie Rivera of the Unified Police Department.

Officers found footprints in the snow and followed them, eventually spotting Ezra Barlow, 31, who they believe was driving the stolen car.

Officers chased him on foot. Barlow jumped fences and ran through yards trying to avoid arrest, Rivera said. Eventually a police dog caught up with him and held him by the leg until he could be apprehended.

Barlow suffered minor injures from the dog bite. He was checked by emergency medical personnel then booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of hit and run, possession of stolen property and other charges.

Barlow had two active felony warrants at the time of his arrest for theft, possession of a controlled substance, providing false information to an officer and failure to stop at the command of an officer.
