SALT LAKE CITY — For the last two years, KSL.com readers have voted on their favorite restaurants, among other things.

So, today, we’re choosing the best of the best; below you’ll find five of our favorites on the A-List.

Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage

Last year it made our list for best sugar cookies, so we were glad to see it make the cut again. Voted the best bakery in Salt Lake County, this bakery offers sandwiches, pizzas, soups and salads in addition to its delectable baked goods.

Schmidt’s turns out a variety of pastries and sweets from rum balls and marzipan cake to Danishes and doughnuts. You can’t really go wrong with their cookies, but my favorites include their mint cookies and filled cookies.

Cafe Med

This quaint restaurant is worth the wait that you will inevitably encounter on the weekends. Call ahead to get on the waiting list or make a reservation, then peruse the menu before you’re seated.

The Med features a large mediterranean menu for such a small place, but my favorite is their moussaka: layers of ground beef and lamb, onions, eggplant and sliced potato, smothered in cream sauce and served with a side of basmati rice. With an appetizer — the dolmas are delicious — it made for a dinner and leftovers for me. It was filling and flavorful.

Additionally, the kabobs are delicious and the pita bread was fluffy and warm.

Sage’s Cafe

If you’re looking for an introduction to meatless or vegan, gluten free, raw or local food, Sage’s is a great place to become converted.

While you will pay more for your meal, Sage’s serves flavorful and healthy meals. Their mushroom stroganoff is as creamy as you would expect — the nut burger is a good substitution to beef and the Magical Wok is delightful.

But where Sage really shines is its appetizer offerings. I could eat their carrot butter crostini and Asian lettuce wraps all day.

Sage's just moved from its ivy-covered downtown location to the old Jade Cafe building.

Just do yourself a favor and get the burnt ends they serve on Fridays.

Now that we’ve established that, I should say I haven’t tried anything here I didn’t wholeheartedly like. The ribs, brisket and pulled pork get flavored while retaining moisture in the smoker, so sauce is unnecessary. Pat’s smoked meatloaf is also a delicious take on the homemade classic.

Blue Plate Diner

Oh, the homefries. These are 1-square inch pieces of fluffy, crunchy-fried heaven.

But, man cannot live on potatoes alone. The Traditional Eggs Benedict and The Benedict omelette is a go-to favorite, but any of their omelets, pancakes or breakfast burritos are just as good.

If you’re there for lunch or dinner, the meatloaf sandwich and spicy fries takes meatloaf a step above what Mom might make (sorry, Mom) and smashes it between two pieces of generously sliced bread.

The Blue Plate serves up generous plated portions, so be prepared to eat until you’re stuffed.
