COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A father and his adult son are safe after escaping from an early-morning house fire Tuesday.

A man was awakened when he began choking and coughing on smoke around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. He woke up his 21-year-old son, and the two escaped their home at 3361 E. Winesap Road (7245 South) with their two dogs, according to Unified Fire Authority Battalion Chief Brian Anderton.

Anderton said he did not know the age of the father or the names of the occupants.

Crews contained the fire to the first floor of the home and extinguished the blaze within about 10 minutes.

The home had two stories and a basement. The upper story received "pretty extensive damage," Anderton said. The fire caused smoke damage to the home and burned in a couple of rooms and the attic. The damage is estimated at $50,000.

No people or animals required medical help after the fire.

The Red Cross responded to help the father and son with their immediate needs. Investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire Tuesday morning.
