WEST JORDAN — Police say a language barrier and a lack of cellphones resulted in some miscommunication and a mother believing her two children were missing.

West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts said a mother left her 2-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son at her home, near 3700 West and 6400 South, on Thursday while she ran an errand. She reportedly told the children to get the landlord, who was home, if they needed anything, according to West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts.

While the mother was gone, however, another friend stopped by the house, found the two children by themselves, and took them with her to her house, Roberts said. That friend apparently does not own a cellphone.

The mother returned home about 10 a.m. and could not find her children, Roberts said. The mother called police about 11 a.m., and investigators began looking for the missing children.

The situation was resolved about 1 p.m. Roberts said he expected the case would be closed and no charges presented to the district attorney for screening.
