SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police have released the name of a man found dead, apparently of hypothermia, near a Zions Bank parking lot.
The body of Kelton M. MacCarthy, 22, of South Salt Lake, was found in a narrow, low-lying area between a retaining wall and a business just outside the parking lot of Zions Bank, 3838 S. 700 East. His cellphone was found on the ground above the retaining wall before MacCarthy's body was discovered.
Witnesses had seen MacCarthy walking around that area about 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday night. They said he appeared to be intoxicated, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller.
Keller said the man had told a friend at a nearby business he was waiting for a ride home. MacCarthy was dressed appropriately for cold weather, Keller said.
Investigators were still waiting for a complete autopsy report, including toxicology results, Thursday. Keller said detectives did not suspect foul play.
MacCarthy is the second person to die from exposure to the cold this week.
On Monday, the body of Reed Brock Karren, 39, was found by a passerby in Memory Grove Park, 300 N. Canyon Road (130 East). An autopsy showed Karren died of hypothermia. Police said Karren was not properly dressed for the bitter cold temperatures.
The death of a third man also remained under investigation Thursday. The man was found in a running vehicle at a salvage yard where he worked. Police believe he may have been living in the car but aren't sure how he died.
