SALT LAKE CITY — The Sugarhouse streetcar system is still in the testing phase, but the Utah Transit Authority says on-board cameras are already showing some near misses.

After viewing one, UTA spokesman Remi Barron said, "We haven't seen many incidents like this. We want to make sure we don't see any more."

Unlike TRAX trains, the streetcar line doesn't have crossing arms that descend to block traffic. It's obvious drivers need to get used to the new trains, Barron said.

"Fortunately the trains are going slow enough that they can come to a stop, probably wouldn't have hit the car," he said. "The trains have the right of way. People need to realize that."

UTA anticipates crashes could happen. Tuesday emergency responders practiced how to lift one of the train cars off of someone.

"Preparation really is the key," said Martin Cocker, UTA exercise controller.

"If people understand what they're doing when they respond to these incidents and everybody has a task, they know exactly how they fit into the overall incident command, then we are by far better off. It's very valuable," he added.

Drills are common when new lines are getting ready to open. The S-Line starts carrying passengers Dec. 8.
