SANDY — Search and rescue crews carried an injured hiker out of Bell Canyon Tuesday after he fell about 30 feet. Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said it was the third rescue his department has conducted in the canyon this year.
The call reporting the injury came into Salt Lake County dispatch at around 2:30 p.m, Hoyal said. Witnesses said the 20-year-old man had apparently lost his footing while hiking near a waterfall.
When search and rescue crews from Salt Lake County and the Sandy Fire Department reached the man, they found he had suffered serious injuries to his arms and legs, Hoyal said.
Considering the number of falls in this same area this year, Hoyal cautioned hikers to be more careful.
"It's important that when people are up here in this area, they need to be aware there are hazards out there, and need to be cognizant of any potential danger to where they could fall," he said.
Rescuers were able to carry the man out of the canyon to a place where a medical helicopter could reach him, Hoyal said. He was then flown to a hospital.
