SALT LAKE CITY — Hundreds turned out at the State Fair Park Saturday for the Wasatch Rails 2013 Utah Model Train Show. The show, which runs all weekend, is designed to celebrate a loved hobby.
This is the 29th year for the show, and model train enthusiasts couldn't have been more excited.
"The whole detail, just everything just, like, blows my mind," said Ethan Smith, a Boy Scout who was visiting the show as part of a free Scout day promotion.
While model railroading is nothing new, the industry continues to find new high-tech mechanisms to improve the trains.
"These trains you see running around here have computer chips in them, some of them do," said model railroad enthusiast Bill Barnhart. "This one here that's coming by is run off of that computer chip in the middle, and you can run it off of your cellphone."
Along with seeing some elaborate working model railroad layouts, visitors were able to view railroad memorabilia and artwork. There were also several how-to clinics, vendor booths, and contests for visitors to participate in.
If you missed it Saturday, there's still one more day to see the show. Doors open Sunday morning at 10:00, and the show runs through 4 p.m.
