WEST VALLEY CITY — Saturday morning, a vacant space at a West Valley City residential complex became a fully functioning playground that kids and adults of all ages can use.

More than 200 volunteers showed up at Byde-A-Wyle Haciendas housing community, 3455 S. 1185 West, at 8:30 a.m. Ranging from neighborhood residents to employees from various businesses, they came together with one task in mind: to build a 2,500-square-foot playground in six hours.

"We found that the best way to get all of the volunteers here is to have something that gets done in one day," said Oraida Roman, president of senior products for Humana. "It's a great way to get a lot of people together at one time, versus doing little bits at a time."

Approximately half of the households at Byde-A-Wyle Haciendas consist of families with children and seniors. But the complex lacked modern recreational equipment for activity and exercise.

"In this community, the yards are very small. The children don't have a ton of play equipment here, so as owners of the park we encouraged this and wanted this to happen," said Chris Mulcock, co-owner of Byde-A-Wyle Haciendas.

"It's kind of cool to watch the whole community come together like this, watch this go up," said Robert Coleman, a resident of Byde-A-Wyle Haciendas.

"It's kind of cool. (I've) never seen a playground being put together before," he said.

Most importantly, this playground will accommodate adults with all needs.

"This is something new," Mulcock said. "But they wanted to try adding exercise equipment that would be ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 2:30 p.m. But residents will have to wait until Tuesday for the cement to dry before they can enjoy their new playground.
