LIHUE, Hawaii — U.S. Marshalls arrested a man from Taylorsville, Utah in Hawaii on Friday who has been wanted by police since Sept. 27, 2012 for a parole violation.
Michael Gary Nielsen, 51, was arrested without incident at about 9:15 a.m. at a residence in Kapaa, Kauai by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
It is unknown how long Nielson had been living in Hawaii. It was reported that he had been allegedly living under the alias Russell Pearson at times, but Hawaii officials said that didn't seem to be the case.
"That might have been an online persona or something like that he was using because it looks like he was primarily using his normal, Michael Nielsen here," said Hawaii police official, Nolan Sasaki.
Nielsen was initially convicted in 2002 on two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first degree felony; one count of violation of protective order, a class A misdemeanor; and one count of tampering with a witness/juror. The female victim was an 8-year-old family member at the time of the alleged incident.
Officials could not disclose how they found Nielsen, but it was investigators in Utah that discovered his whereabouts.
"Investigators in Utah contacted the U.S. Marshals in Utah, then (the Utah marshals) coordinated the takedown. So it was actually the Utah investigators that found Nielson in Kauai," said Donna Diaz, U.S. Marshall in the district of Hawaii.
Nielsen was transported to Kauai Police Station for booking pending court appearance and extradition to Utah.
