Amanda Butterfield reporting
Today was a stressful day at University Hospital. All the computers went down, and that forced doctors to turn trauma patients away. It was the largest computer system failure the hospital has ever experienced.
At 10:45 this morning, hospital officials issued 'code yellow', meaning there's an internal problem with the hospital. The main computer system for all departments crashed, so nurses and doctors had to keep records the old fashioned way, with pen and paper.
Any medication that had to be ordered, patient charts that had to be updated, patient information that needed to be submitted was all done by hand as engineers tried to figure out what happened to the computer system. We're told, through it all, the patients' care was never jeopardized.
The equipment used for surgeries and procedures was not affected, so all scheduled procedures on current patients went as planned. However, hospital officials decided not to take any new critically injured patients because of the crash, and instead deferred them to other hospitals.
The computers came back on nine hours later, at about 7:45 this evening. Engineers are still trying to pinpoint the problem. They are confident it wasn't sabotage, but a problem with the technology.
We've been told everything is working just fine right now.
