LOGAN — Wildlife officers in North Logan are tracking down poachers, who they say are putting people in danger by hunting inside city limits.

Wes Hoth is a deer enthusiast who has collected pictures of deer from hunts and from around North Logan. Hoth said he has followed two deer in particular over the years, and he loves taking pictures of them with his daughter.

"I take my daughters out on a bi-weekly at least basis, just to find these bucks and to show them," Hoth said.

Hoth said the two deer have become quite well known in the North Logan area, and he and his hunter friends have come to admire the bucks.

"They're very photogenic (so to say) deer, because they'll let you get up right next to them and take pictures," he said.

However, one of the deer was recently illegally hunted down and killed. Division of Wildlife Officers believe it happened inside city limits. The deer was found wounded in a field next to a residential area, and had to be euthanized.

"The biggest problem with this is the public safety element," said Division of Wildlife Officer Chris Schulze. "Any time somebody starts shooting, discharging a weapon in city limits."

The accused poacher who shot the buck was arrested and could face two misdemeanor charges.

Hoth said the incident wasn't right on several levels.

"One of the terms you hear all the time is the fair chase," he said. "You know, I see no fair chase in chasing a deer that will walk up to you and basically eat out of your hand."

Division of Wildlife officers are working with North Park Police to find another suspected poacher.
