MAGNA — A man was arrested Thursday night after leading police on a high-speed chase, his second within a week.

Mark West, 55, was driving a stolen BMW on Highway 201 around 10 p.m. when an officer spotted him swerving on the road. Salt Lake Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the officer tried to pull him over, but West wouldn't stop.

West went eastbound for a while and then went westbound on the 201. Hoyal said West got off in Magna around 9200 West.

Police laid down spikes to stop the BMW. West allegedly tried to hit the officer near the spikes with his car, police said. Police boxed him in with patrol cars and West's vehicle stopped after he hit one of the police cars.

Hoyal said West tried to escape on foot but an officer took him down with a Taser.

He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, fleeing, possession of a stolen vehicle, drug paraphernalia, and traffic violations related to the chase.

West was also allegedly involved with a high-speed chase earlier in the week after terrorizing a clerk at a gas station in Taylorsville, Hoyal said.
