PROVO — When BYU couldn't pull out a win in Virginia last week it seemed like a win against No. 15 Texas was all but impossible, but the Cougars throttled the Longhorns while breaking records along the way.

"I don't think a strong enough hallucinogenic exists that would have had a #BYU fan thinking they could run for 550 against Texas. Amazing," tweeted @CougarStats.

That's a fair statement. The BYU offense looked like a little league team against UVa, but the Taysom Hill led Cougar offense found their bread and butter against Texas.

"BYU UPSETs No. 15 Texas, 40-21. BYU combines for 550 (!!) rush yards," tweeted @SportsCenter.

That's right, the Cougars rushed for 550 yards, that's most in BYU history and the most ever given up by Texas.

As great as the rush game was, the passing game needs work. Well, needs work is an understatement.

"Phew, #BYU almost had to pass. Dodged a bullet," tweeted KSL's Alex Kirry.

To give some context there BYU had just 129 yards through the air along with an interception. Taysom Hill had trouble throwing the ball Saturday night, but that doesn't matter too much when you rattle off 259 yards on the ground.

"Last 3 FBS QBs to rush for 250 yards in a game: Vince Young, Denard Robinson, Taysom Hill," tweeted @max_olson.

Not bad company to be in, Taysom.

While Hill broke records left and right, the BYU defense continued to dominate.

"Kudos to BYU defense. Them boys played hard," tweeted Texas fan @Kyzar56.

How hard you ask? BYU held Texas to just 5 for 17 on third down and 0 for 3 on fourth. The defense punished the Texas offense time and time again and, as always, Kyle Van Noy led the defense.

"Kyle Van Noy has been chosen to star in the next ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre', " tweeted @PhillyMatty.

Nothing like a clever tweet. Seriously though, Van Noy was all over the field and constantly in Texas QB David Ash's face.

Like a true leader, Van Noy lead his team to a huge win and even took responsibility for last week's misstep.

"Kyle Van Noy: ‘tonight showed our true identity,' " tweeted @PKKinahan. "He apologized for not getting the team ready to play last week."

BYU came to play Saturday night and not even a weather delay, yes another one, could throw them off their game. Cougar nation is on cloud nine right now, but a little bit of the wind was taken out of their sails when College Football Final on ESPN recapped the game.

"#ESPN just can't give #BYU credit 4 win. Not one word on their effort, just Texas failures," tweeted @jon_rosenlund. Story line hint: Hill, Van Noy, stiff defense."

Regardless of credit or respect, BYU played a solid game and put up a big win against the Texas Longhorns.

BYU now has a bye week to try and get their minds straight before they take on rival Utah on Sept. 21.
