SALT LAKE CITY — Film and television stars will soon gather in Salt Lake City to rub shoulders with their fans at Comic Con and Kevin Sorbo, known for his role on TV as Hercules, is already in town.

Sorbo said he has more invitations to Comic Con events than he can possibly accept, but he came to Utah because it is a first for Salt Lake City and because it may break a record for attendance for an opening event.

"This is the first one ever here and I think up to 28,000 to 30,000 people are already coming which is massive for a first time event because I've done other, a couple other, first time events and half that number," Sorbo said.

For five seasons Sorbo brought the strength and heart of Hercules to life in a TV series of the same name. At 6 foot 3 inches and 235 pounds, Sorbo said at first he didn't think he was hero material.

"I thought they wanted some Arnold Schwarzenegger pumped up on steroids, 285 (pounds)," Sorbo said. "I laughed initially. And my manager said, ‘Please, just read the script.' And I read it and I laughed. We did five two-hour movies before it was a series."

Sorbo is now bringing his fame as a super hero to Salt Lake and the much anticipated Comic Con. Comic Con events bring actors and comic book creators together with their fans and in area, Comic Cons are beginning to rival film festivals.

"I enjoy doing them; it's fun for me," Sorbo said. "I get invited a lot, probably five or six of these a month around the world. I pick up about five or six a year to go to if my time is there. And the response from people is huge."

For another five years, Sorbo played Captain Dylan Hunt on Andromeda. Thanks to new networks, he said he still gets stopped every day just going to the post office or grocery store by the next generation.

He said he loves the smiles he sees from fans and believes people still look for heroes.

"Hopefully there's a champion out there that people can look up to, that ‘I like that person, I appreciate what that person is doing to spread a moral message instead of a negative one,' " Sorbo said.

Sorbo will be at Comic Con Thursday, Friday and Saturday. He will host a screening Thursday evening from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
