SALT LAKE CITY — Back-to-school seems like it should still be weeks away, but not for thousands of students who attend year-round school.

The Jordan and Davis school districts welcomed kids back to school Thursday at 25 year-round schools.

More students than ever are in year-round school. Davis School District has five schools on a year-round schedule. This year, Jordan School District went from 19 year-round schools to 20, and there are close to 1,000 students at each school. Most of those schools' yards are packed with portables to accommodate the students.

Some parents said they would prefer to switch to a traditional schedule, but with the large number of kids in their areas, they don't really have a choice.

"(My kids) have friends and cousins that don't have to go back to school yet, and still get to play and have summer, so (my kids) are kind of torn that way but, it is what it is," said mother Caprice Roberts.
