SALT LAKE CITY — Temperatures have been record-breaking this summer and many people are looking for the best ways to beat the heat. If you have kids, chances are you need new ideas on how to keep your family cool.

Splash pads have been growing in popularity lately in most Utah cities. They're safe for younger and older kids alike. These small, usually free water parks are the way to go when it comes to beating the summer heat.

Think you have visited all the best ones? Here are five splash pads that make the top of our list for location, uniqueness and just plain ol' entertainment value.

Liberty Park stream system

Liberty Park has a few areas to take the kids for water fun. A splash pad was added in 2005 next to the Rotary Park play structure. A few hundred feet from the splash pad is the Seven Canyons Fountain area. Kids love to wade through the man-made streams and take a dip in the small pond at the north end of the stream system. Each stream is designed after one of Utah's canyon waterways and feeds into a small, park-like valley. Most of the area is shaded by trees, making it a cool place for parents to relax while the kids splash around.

Highland City Town Center splash pad

Highland City boasts a splash pad in the middle of their city office buildings. The splash pad is located just south of the library, which means you can take the kids in for a story and then outside to cool off in the water. What makes this splash pad unique is the river system that feeds into the main pad area. A large stream, originating from a man-made waterfall, runs about 40 feet through large rocks, making it the perfect place to sail, boat or wade around.

New as of this summer, the Pioneer Park splash pad in Provo has already brought in thousands of visitors. The Provo splash pad has a lot of the standard features like fountains and waterfalls, but is one of the only splash pads to run during a farmer's market. Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. vendors from the Provo Farmers Market meet to sell fresh food and produce just a few feet away from the splash pad. Make it a comprehensive outing and head down with the family for breakfast, shopping, and water fun.

St. George Town Square splash pad

Whether you live in St. George or are just visiting, you're probably looking for ways to cool down in triple digit heat.
