CENTERVILLE — Two traffic accidents on I-15 in Davis County killed a 16-year-old and injured two others Thursday afternoon and forced the closure of the freeway for a time.

The first accident happened just before 1 p.m. near the Parrish Lane exit in Centerville. The Utah Highway Patrol said three vehicles ran into each other when northbound traffic slowed to avoid metal debris in the roadway.

The vehicles involved in that accident had pulled off to the side of the road when an oncoming Land Rover hit some of the debris and the driver lost control, UHP Cpl. Todd Johnson said.

"It veered to the right side and hit the three vehicles and three pedestrians associated with those vehicles," Johnson said.

A 16-year-old girl was critically injured and had to be flown to a hospital in a medical helicopter. The girl died Thursday evening from injuries sustained in the accident, according to Utah Department of Public Safety spokesperson Dwayne Baird.

The two other pedestrians sustained serious injuries and were taken to an area hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Land Rover was not injured.

Northbound I-15 was closed at Parrish Lane in Centerville for some time Thursday, as were northbound exit ramps at 2600 South, 500 South, 400 North and 500 West.
