SALT LAKE CITY — A man charged with child rape turned himself in to Salt Lake police on Thursday.

Last week, detectives asked for the public's help in trying to find Chervon Jason Laptiste, 40. He had been charged in 3rd District Court with three counts of rape of a child, three counts of sodomy on a child, and three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. He was also charged with dealing in harmful materials to a minor and witness tampering, both third-degree felonies.

Laptiste was accused of raping the girl when she was 13, about two years ago.

Thursday morning, police say he walked into the police department and turned himself in.
