SALT LAKE CITY — Happy National Doughnut day. To celebrate, ksl.com is eating doughnuts and sharing with our readers where some local favorites can be found.

National Doughnut Day (note the more traditional spelling of "doughnut") was created in 1938 by Chicago's Salvation Army to honor the "lassies" who served doughnuts to World War I soldiers. The volunteers were sent to France in 1917 to serve the soldiers there, and their doughnuts were such a hit, the women came to be known as "Doughnut Dollies."

Although National Doughnut Day is now more often used as an excuse to binge on doughnuts, it still serves as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army in Chicago.

Here are a few favorite local doughnut shops. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know on the comment boards.
