SALT LAKE CITY — Police said a man went on an overnight drive, picking up stolen items along the way. He didn't realize he was being followed by unmarked police cars.

Sgt. Chad Egan of the Unified Police Department said it started around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in Kearns.

Officers in unmarked cars followed the vehicle for hours as it moved from Salt Lake County to Farmington.

The driver of the vehicle then spotted a couple of patrol cars, turned off his lights and sped away. Police used spike strips to blow his tires and chased him as he drove on flats.

The vehicle eventually crashed through a fence near 700 North and I-215. The driver, a 41-year-old man from Taylorsville, was taken into custody around 2:30 a.m. Police said he has a significant criminal history regarding burglaries.

Police said the bed of the truck started out empty but ended up with a number of items in it; all of them likely were stolen.
