Police offer $5K for info about LDS church fire

OGDEN — Police have been investigating the arson that took place at an Ogden Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building May 5.

The investigation has been a combined effort between the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Ogden Police Department and the Ogden City Fire Department. They announced Tuesday that a reward of up to $5,000 will be offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person, or persons, responsible for the fire at the church at 1590 13th Street in Ogden.

"ATF and the Ogden Police Department are committed to solving this investigation, and we are asking the community to come forward with information that could help provide leads to perfect a criminal case against those responsible for this senseless act," Andrew L. Traver, ATF special agent in charge, said in an news release.

Ogden City police received a call at about 7:30 a.m. May 5 after the building's maintenance workers discovered something had been thrown into the window of the church. Police say several incendiary devices were thrown into the window.

Eric Bauman, deputy fire chief of the Ogden City Fire Department, said there was evidence of fire damage in the kitchen, but it was confined to that space and extinguished itself. He estimated the damage to be about $1,000.
