MAPLE CANYON, Sanpete County — A hiker is in the hospital after falling at least 50 feet in Maple Canyon Friday morning and having to be hoisted from the small ledge on which he landed.

Sanpete County dispatch was alerted to the injured hiker at about 6:15 a.m. Friday, according to the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office. Sanpete Search and Rescue and Sanpete Technical Rescue teams and a Moroni ambulance team were sent to Maple Canyon, a popular area for rock climbing and rappelling.

The rescue teams had some difficulty reaching the hiker, who had fallen 50–60 feet and landed on a small ledge. He had suffered multiple fractures and was bleeding, according to the sheriff's office.

The hiker was hoisted out of the canyon and transported via Lifeflight to a local hospital. His condition was unknown as of Friday afternoon.
