SALT LAKE CITY — When the Salt Lake Community College girls softball team traveled to Twin Falls, Idaho, for regional playoffs over the weekend, they thought their only excitement would be during the game. But that was only a warm-up to a much bigger moment.

While taking a break after the team's Friday game, freshman softball player Megan Bradshaw ended up saving a man's life.

"I've never had anything like that happen to me. It doesn't seem real," Bradshaw said Monday.

She and her teammates were finishing up an afternoon of swimming at Dierkes Lake when they spotted a man who appeared to be in his 20s, flailing in the water.

"We were just packing up to leave, and there was a guy yelling for help," Bradshaw said.

The man was drowning, and Bradshaw knew exactly what to do because she used to be a lifeguard. She ran down the dock, jumped in, and, with the help of another teammate's husband, pulled the swimmer to safety.

The man told them he started floundering when his legs cramped up. Once out of the water, he was OK.

"(He) just said, ‘Thank you,' " Bradshaw said.

Back home in Salt Lake, her teammates are proud and still in awe. Being a freshman, they said Bradshaw will definitely have new nickname next season.

How about Megan Bradshaw: the lifesaver on and off the field?
