WEST VALLEY CITY — Police want to know why a 9-year-old boy was riding his bike on the freeway in the middle of the night.

According to investigators, a couple waved down police who said they found the boy riding his bike on I-215 near 3500 South around 11:30 p.m. Friday night.

Police were not immediately able to gather much information from the boy, including who his family members are or where he lives, but were able to locate his mother Saturday night and forward that information to the Department of Child and Family Services.

DCFS, who had custody of the boy Saturday, would not disclose whether or not the boy had been reunited with his family.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, a store owner called West Valley police after seeing reports of the boy, saying a mother came into her store Friday night with a picture of the boy and asked if she had seen him.

West Valley police found that the boy had been listed Saturday as a missing child and forwarded that information to the DCFS. Cropper said they will investigate the lapse of time between the mother searching for the boy and in filing an official police report.

West Valley City Police Sgt. Trudy Cropper said the boy did not have any physical injuries or any other marks to raise suspicion.

"But he was very unkempt," Cropper said. "He was not in a clean condition,"

Investigators will look into whether the boy was being neglected or abused.

"Definitely alarming when a young child is found on the freeway late at night and it's dark," Cropper said.
