OGDEN — The name of Ogden police officer Jared Francom will be memorialized in Washington, D.C., next week in the presence of his family and department colleagues.

Francom was killed and five other officers injured Jan. 4, 2012, when Matthew David Stewart, 38, opened fire as members of the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force attempted to serve a warrant at Stewart's Ogden home.

Francom's wife and two daughters, along with other family members, will be accompanied by other officers involved in the 2012 shooting, as well as Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell, Weber County Attorney Dee Smith and others. Francom's name will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on Wednesday.

The ceremony is part of National Police Week, and honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty last year.

"This is the first time since 1963 that an Ogden officer will be honored at this national memorial," Ogden Police Chief Mike Ashment said. "There is a lot of emotion involved in this event. It’s not just the family or our department that has felt the pain of loss, but an entire community who is personally connected to that tragic day over 16 months ago."
