SALT LAKE CITY — There are thousands of ghost towns scattered throughout the American West. Some have been restored as tourist attractions and have served as backdrops in classic western films, while others endured decades without visitors and gradually faded into the dust.

It’s the towns in the middle that fascinate us most — those with original houses and structures that have somehow survived the brutal elements of nature. These abandoned ghost towns offer a rare connection to the past. And the lucky ones, remote enough to evade vandalism and arson, still seem to echo their forgotten stories.

Nevada has a high number of these unforgettable relics. They are scattered throughout the state and some of the best gems are unknown to all but the most dedicated adventurers.

This gallery features photos from some of Nevada’s most stunning ghost towns, including Tenabo, Pioche, Ione and Gold Point.
