SALT LAKE CITY — Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” was definitely met with its fair share of criticism. Toward the top of the complaint list, probably just under “Why are we doing another origin story?” was a general dissatisfaction with the look of the film’s villain — The Lizard.

Now, thanks to some set pictures coming from last night’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” filming in Times Square, The Daily Mail is giving readers their first look at Peter Parker’s next adversary, Electro, and not unexpectedly, viewers are split on what they're seeing.

“Are you sure these aren't set pics from the ‘White Chicks’ sequel?” one commenter asked on a popular message board.

In the pictures, Jamie Foxx appears sickly, covered in powder blue makeup, looking from underneath a hoodie with pale contact lenses.

“He looks absolutely ridiculous,” another commentor said. “Like the evil spawn of a rabid smurf and a macrame project gone awry.”

On another board: “Not bad, not bad at all!”

The blue look comes as a surprise to many, since traditionally Electro wears a very loud, yellow and green suit. However, fans of the “Ultimate” series have seen blue Electro, but might otherwise be confused because the “Ultimate” storyline paints Max Dillon (Electro) as a teenager who receives his powers after a failed experiment at the hands of Justin Hammer.

Since Disney owns the rights to the Justin Hammer character, played by Sam Rockwell in “Iron Man 2,” and Foxx is 45 years old, it’s unlikely the Ultimate storyline is driving Webb's vision.

So what does this mean for the next chapter of Webb’s “Spider-Man” series? For that, we’ll need to wait until next year. But while we wait, here is the official description from Sony:

In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy — between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can't come quickly enough. Peter hasn't forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen's father to protect her by staying away — but that's a promise he just can't keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.
