SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Tax Commission is offering to waive penalties and interest through April 16 for filers as a result of hardware problems with the state tax form.

The move comes after multiple reports of people receiving an error message when they tried to file their state taxes online Sunday and Monday. The new deadline is April 16 at midnight.

Tax commission spokesman Charlie Roberts said Sunday's glitch was caused by a faulty switch and router, which was temporarily fixed after about five hours.

Last-minute filers met the same fate Monday around 8:25 p.m., however, when the glitch returned and the hardware system went down.

"We just ask that they be patient," Roberts said. "They'll be treated fairly."

As of 10:15 p.m. Monday, the site was back online and functioning properly, Roberts said.

Roberts said people should still get their federal taxes filed in time because the issue is only with the state tax form.
