SALT LAKE CITY — Over the last four weeks of practice, Utah's offense has been able to move the ball up and down the field.

That came to an abrupt end Saturday in the Utes' second spring scrimmage.

"We did not get enough chunk yardage plays today and our quarterbacks were not as effective as they need to be," Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said after the practice session. "It didn't help that we dropped some passes."

And he was right. One of Travis Wilson's first series ended with an interception by Tyron Morris-Edwards (Ute fans will remember him as the guy with the touchdown saving tackle against BYU). One of Adam Schulz's first series ended in a perfectly thrown yet dropped deep pass in the end zone intended for Anthony Denham.

Luckily the Utes have some "Luck" on their side, and a guy named Karl Williams too. Karl "The Truth" Williams lead all running backs with 101 yards on 10 carries with two scores. Lucky Radley added 58 yards on 12 carries, while James Poole had 26 yards on only five carries.

"Karl did a really nice job running north-south and really all of our running backs played well—James Poole, Lucky Radley and Kelvin York," said Whittingham. "Our blocking for the run game was good and so was our pass protection.

Kelvin York, the projected starter, found his way back into practice after missing the last few days of spring with an injury. York rushed for 35 yards on seven carries, including a six-yard rushing touchdown.

The defense was lead by Morris-Edwards, linebacker Jared Norris had the Utes' second interception and LT Filiaga added two pass breakups. With V.J. Fehoko also contributing a 7-yard sack, the linebacker position group appears to be well ahead from a year ago when eight different players found their way into the starting rotation.

"The defense made some plays and it's starting to shape up, even down at least four to five for sure starters. We have to tackle better, though. We were in the right position, but we have got to wrap them up."

Next week will be the Utes final days of spring practice, highlighted by the Red and White game on April 20th. The scrimmage will start at 1 pm and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
