OREM — A barn caught fire late Monday night, killing several horses and goats before it was put out at about 12:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire happened near 1600 S. Geneva Road and was put out at 12:15 a.m. after crews fought to contain and extinguish it for about 45 minutes. Utah County Fire officials said the nearest fire hydrant was about a mile a way, making it difficult for crews to fight the fire. Trucks drove back and forth to load up with water, and crews focused on keeping the fire contained.

However, the fire spread to a second barn and a utility trailer. Half a dozen horses were able to escape, according to Deputy Raymond Edwards with the Utah County Sheriff's Office. Units from Provo, Orem and Utah were dispatched to the scene.
