SOUTH JORDAN — Police are investigating a case of mismanaged funds involving the former boys basketball coach at Bingham High School.

Mark Dubach recently resigned his position with the school's basketball team, effectively ending his 22-year coaching career. He also left his teaching position mid-semester.

An investigation by the Deseret News confirmed rumors that the reasoning behind Dubach's departure had to do with allegations of "financial improprieties and verbal abuse of players."

The paper also received confirmation from the South Jordan Police Department that investigators are looking into the case.

Deseret News:

Bingham High administrators said the issue came to light when a couple met with them to discuss multiple complaints that Dubach was being verbally abusive to his players.

Shawn Morley and his wife told Principal Tom Hicks they had been paying rent to Dubach so their daughter's Jr. Jazz team could practice in the high school's gym once a week. But when the team was kicked out of the gym because they weren't on the schedule, Morley became concerned about where the $800 he'd given Dubach had gone.

For his part, Dubach said the whole incident is just a big misunderstanding. He claimed he thought the money was a donation to the basketball team, and that his reason for resigning was simply to give the basketball program "a fresh start."

Utah State Office of Education officials plan to meet later this week to determine if the allegations against Dubach could jeopardize his teaching license.

Meanwhile, the police investigation continues.
