FARR WEST — A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition after her neck got tangled in a rope swing outside her Farr West home Thursday.

Weber County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Lowther, the accident happened at about 7:30 p.m. The girl's father let her out to play for about 5 minutes, and when he went to check on her he found her with her neck caught in the swing.

Lowther said CPR was performed on scene and crews were able to get a pulse back. The girl, who's name has not been released, was transported by Life Flight to Primary Children's Medical Center.

"Just watching them bring out the little body board to carry the little girl was really shocking, because just a little bit ago I'd seen (her) playing." Lexi Hartsgrove, neighbor

"Just watching them bring out the little body board to carry the little girl was really shocking, because just a little bit ago I'd seen (her) playing," said neighbor Lexi Hartsgrove. "It just happened so fast."

The girl was still listed in critical condition Friday afternoon.

"Unintentional, accidental injuries are one of the leading causes of death for children 14 years (old) and under," said Jann Fawcett, coordinator for Safe Kids Utah.

Fawcett said while these accidents do happen, there are some things parents can and should watch out for on playgrounds:

  • Look out for possible breaks, loose bolts or cracked surfaces on the play equipment.
  • For at-home playgrounds, read over your manual so you can understand what the manufacturer is recommending (some are not designed for children under 5 years old).
  • Don't let your kids play on a playground while wearing a hoodie, or any other coat with strings attached (they can get tangled in ropes or chains)

Fawcett said paying close attention to the little details might make the difference in the future.
