RICHFIELD — Richfield police say an elementary school principal found a handgun in a fifth-grader's backpack.
The Richfield Reaper reports it happened on Tuesday at Pahvant Elementary, 520 N. 300 West, where the 10-year-old was immediately suspended for 10 days.
An expulsion hearing is scheduled at the end of that suspension, and criminal charges are pending.
Richfield police said the handgun was stolen from a family friend the night before, but the parents and gun owner were unaware of it.
Sevier District officials said another student reported the gun to administrators, but police said at least two other kids found out about the gun and didn't say anything.
"Parents, please talk with your children and explain to them how important it is to tell a teacher, principal or adult if they know of a weapon at school," said the Richfield police in a prepared statement.
