SALT LAKE CITY — Students from Salt Lake Community College hosted a Saint Baldrick's Foundation Head Shaving Event Monday to raise money for childhood cancer research.
They set the goal to raise $5,000 for the foundation, which advocates for funding for childhood cancer research. The organization began with one event in 2000 grew to having 1,300 events in 2012, according to their website.
- In 2007, 10,400 children under age 15 were diagnosed with cancer
- About 1,545 children will die from the disease
- Cancer is the leading cause of death in U.S. children ages 1 to 14

Like the event at SLCC, the organization's events are unique and involve head shaving. So far, events hosted in 2013 have almost surpassed the number of events in 2012, even with eight months left in the year.
"It's a good cause," said Michelle Roberts, a shavee at the event. "I actually don't have anybody personally that has died from cancer, but I just have a friend who got me involved in it. But she moved and I thought I'd continue doing it."
At least five students signed up to shave their heads and take part in the event. Other ways to help the foundation include joining one of its advocacy efforts or playing "BaldGames," where a team's players shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer.
