TOOELE — Police arrested two people in connection with the alleged kidnapping of a 4-year-old boy Thursday morning.

Around 5 a.m. Thursday, the boy's mother said an acquaintance, Shawn Bergeron, 35, kicked in her home's door, entering with Stephanie Goff, 22. They began arguing about the boy.

"According to the mother, the argument escalated to a point and he finally said, 'I'm taking the boy,' and grabbed the son and left," said Tooele Police Lt. Paul Wimmer.

The boy's mother called police, providing them with a car license plate number. Police quickly tracked Bergeron to a house on Erickson Road.

Upon officers' arrival at the house, Goff and Bergeron surrendered to police. Police located the boy inside the house scared, but unharmed.

"He was shook up though, definitely," Wimmer said. "He was upset and happy to be returned to mom."

Wimmer said during their interview with Bergeron that he claimed he took the child out of concern for his welfare. But police say the action was not carried out appropriately.

"In order for that to have been a valid defense, he would have to be bringing the child to authorities — us, child family services," Wimmer said.

The case was initially believed to be a custody case, as Bergeron thinks he may be the boy's father, but the boy's family claims he is not.

Bergeron and Goff were booked into the Tooele County Jail for felony kidnapping.
