NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia — An Australian driver and his passenger narrowly escaped a massive tornado that struck recently in New South Wales.
Daniel Clarke, 24, was traveling with a friend when the 50-meter tornado appeared in a field next to them. They began filming the 155-mph storm as nearby power lines exploded, flashing blue.
"We wanted to film it as it passed us," Clarke wrote on his YouTube channel. "We could see the path it was taking and knew there was a good opportunity to film it."
As the tornado moved toward them, the video shows rain and debris hammering the windshield as Clarke drives in reverse in an attempt to escape the storm. He eventually does a hand-brake turn to get his car facing forward, and the two manage to escape.
The tornado was one of at least two major tornadoes to hit New South Wales and Victoria, Australia, according to 3 News. The storms left 80 people injured, two critically.
