COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — An 11-year-old girl will require plastic surgery after she was attacked by a family member's pit bull Saturday.

Family was gathering at a home near 7100 South and 2800 East, including the owner's 11-year-old niece when the attack occurred, according to Sgt. Gary Young with Cottonwood Heights police.

The owner had placed the dog in a back bedroom, out of the way of guests. The niece, without knowing the pit bull was in the room, opened the door and was subsequently attacked by the dog, receiving several bites to the face, Young said.

The girl was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center for treatment.

Around 1 p.m., the owner called Cottonwood Heights police and reported the incident. He had animal control take the dog and requested that the animal be put down, according to Young.

Young said he was not aware of any previous aggressive history with the dog. He also said that the owner did the right thing in both placing the animal in a back bedroom and in reporting the incident.

The injuries were "fairly extensive," and the child was awaiting plastic surgery Sunday afternoon.

No charges will be filed in the incident.
