HOLLADAY — A 60-year history gave way to a new era Friday as students at Olympus High School got a look at their new school — and many gave rave reviews.

"It's amazing! I can't even explain it," said student Mikenna Yingling. "It's way better than our old school."

The Granite School District earlier said Olympus invested in a state-of-the-art energy-efficient lighting system for the new school. LED light bulbs installed throughout the building will only need to be replaced every 15 to 20 years.

The new school also has a commons area and is wired for technology, but those aren't the only updates:

  • The old Olympus High was built in 1953 and had 1,028 students. This new $70 million building will house 1,500 students.
  • In 1953, pedal pushers had just come on the dress code scene. Today, leggins are the "in" thing.
  • Students in the 1950s would have bought a Coke in the machine for 10 cents. Today, Cokes are $1 &83212; but it's against federal law to buy them during lunch

Olympus has a unique legacy of family generations. The principal and many faculty were students here, and in a new building that won't change.

"(There is) a lot of tradition and memories in the old one, you know? But it will be fun to have this new school," student Abby Jones said.

Thursday night, alumni were invited to take one final walk through the hallways before the old Olympus High building closes its doors forever. Class pictures and pieces of memorabilia were on display.

"You know, it's kind of sad," said Amy Naylor, a 1992 alumna. "It's been here a long time. It's been one of the landmarks here in Holladay."
