SALT LAKE CITY — One person is dead and three have been taken into custody after police shot a man who fired upon police officers trying to apprehend a parole violator.

Members of the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team, a project of the U.S. Marshals, were attempting to arrest a parole violator at 1159 S. Foulger Street (35 East) Tuesday afternoon.

While attempting to apprehend the violator, another individual opened fire on officers, shooting a single round. Officers then returned fire, wounding the man.

"I'm not sure myself how many did fire," said Sgt. Shawn Josephson with the Salt Lake City Police Department. "I just know there was more than one JCAT member who returned fire."

He was rushed to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead. Police recovered the man's gun but didn't specify what kind of firearm he was carrying.

Police then negotiated with individuals still in the home, eventually arresting two men and one woman, including the violator.

Police did not identify the man, but Josephson said he was a fugitive facing charges including aggravated robbery. He could face additional charges based on Tuesday's search, police said.
