SANDY — Police are investigating a home invasion robbery involving as many as three suspects who allegedly tied up a young man and stunned him with a device.

The victim, in his 20s, was alone at the home near 1980 East and 8950 South when he heard a knock at the door around 7 a.m., Sandy Police Lt. Justin Chapman said. He told police a man at the door had a badge and said he was a police officer working on an investigation.

The victim let the man into the home.

"He was overpowered by this initial suspect who came in, and they did end up tying him up to kind of sequester him," Chapman said.

The victim was blindfolded and restrained with flex ties while at least one and possibly two other people entered the home. Police believe the man posing as a police officer also had some sort of stun device that they used on the victim.

The victim apparently heard them rummaging through the home and later found they stole some items. Police estimate they were in the home around 15 minutes, Chapman said.

Soon after, the victim's mother returned to the home, found him and called 911. The victim suffered minor scrapes and bruises.

The suspect was described as a tall, black male with an athletic build. Police said an unfamiliar gray Dodge Caravan was spotted by neighbors in the area at the time of the alleged incident.

Police said there have been reports of similar incidents in Sandy and in Salt Lake County and they were working with other agencies to determine whether it is the same suspect.

Police also advised anyone wanting to verify whether a police officer is an actual law enforcement officer to call their local dispatch.
