LEHI — Police are looking for a man they say stole a car and led police on a chase, ending only when he crashed through a fence and into the backyard of a Lehi family.
The pursuit began at 780 W. 100 South after a man allegedly stole a vehicle, according to police.
Details are scarce, but the pursuit apparently ended near 2800 West and 600 South after the man crashed the vehicle through a white fence and into a yard.
He then fled on foot through a field bordering a housing development where officers lost him.
Police are currently on the lookout for the man. They searched nearby homes and combed close fields with K-9 units, but found nothing.
Homeowner Brynn Lillywhite said that her daughter could have been killed. The care took out her daughter's swing set.
"Any other day I think we would have lost her," Lillywhite said. "I'm glad it was today of all the days."
The family was upstairs preparing for a quiet Sunday watching a movie.
"We were upstairs turning Robin Hood on for my little girl, and we just heard this huge noise," she said. "We looked out the window and the car was in the backyard."
Father Rodd Stewart feared the worst when he heard all the sirens. His children were out for an afternoon walk only a block away.
"I didn't know whether to get the car or the shot gun first," he said.
"Normally (this is) a very very quiet neighborhood, so, weird stuff can happen anywhere. Not a typical Sunday."
Police described the man as a white male in his 30s with a bald head, tattoo sleeves on both arms and wearing a white tank top and blue shorts.
