SOUTH SALT LAKE — Two people and two dogs were able to escape a fire that completely destroyed their home Wednesday.

South Salt Lake Fire Department received a report of a structure fire with two people and dogs trapped inside. When the fire department arrived at the home on 400 East and Scott Avenue, all people and animals were accounted for.

According to the fire department's Deputy Chief Kevin Bowman, a young man, who was a resident of the house, helped his sister out of the house before going back inside to rescue the dogs. He was not injured in the fire, though his coat was melted.

Including a carport and shed attached to the house, the structure was between 70 and 80 percent involved. The shed and carport were almost completely involved, and the house was about 50 percent involved.

Despite the fire's size, fire officials were able to knock the flames down and contain the fire quickly, Bowman said.

"We were able to get the owners in there and they recovered some of the clothes and stuff from the back of the structure that never saw any fire. So that was a good thing," Bowman said.

The family living in the house was able to stay with family, Bowman said.

Radiant heat melted the siding of a neighboring home, but the fire was contained to the property.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but Bowman said it likely started in the shed or carport. The entire structure was a total loss.
